FROM THE SHOW: LATIN TINGE WITH JACK COSTANZO & NATI CANO

A conversation with Mariachi legend Nati Cano, backstage at the nightclub he owns, La Fonda. Cano describes what mariachi music means to Mexican audiences, and the evolution of mariachi band to a "deluxe" size. Cano talks about what prompted him to open his own club in 1969, and the collaboration with Linda Ronstadt that started there.

LATIN TINGE: TITO PUENTE AND NATI CANO

For National Hispanic Heritage Month, we're celebrating the "Latin tinge" in American music. We'll hear a classic interview with the late Nuyorican bandleader and King of the Timbales, Tito Puente, who tells us about the roots of tropical Latin jazz in Spanish Harlem. Then, it's off to the West Coast, where we visit the Los Angeles club of the late, great bandleader Nati Cano. As leader of Mariachi Los Camperos, Nati Cano was a central figure in the Mexican Mariachi scene of East LA. All this, plus music from Dizzy Gillespie, Lalo Guerrero, Los Lobos, Buena Vista Social Club, Freddy Fender, Professor Longhair and more.

LATIN TINGE WITH JACK COSTANZO & NATI CANO

American Routes explores Latin ties to American music with mariachi bandleader Natividad "Nati" Cano. Mariachi has influenced Western swing and others styles. Cano has worked closley over the years with Tucson-born vocalist Linda Ronstadt. Plus the unlikely Italian-American "bongo king" Jack Costanzo on learning Latin, tropical, and jazz styles from the likes of Desi Arnaz and Perez Prado.

LATIN TINGE

Legends of Latin music: Tito Puente and Nati Cano. We visit with these great bandleaders and musicians in New York and Los Angeles respectively to hear about the roots of tropical Latin jazz in Spanish Harlem and the Mexican mariachi scene of East L.A.
